For The Love Of The North

On Valentine’s Day 2017, husband and wife duo Paul and Lucy Hull launched For The Love of The North. Born out of their passion for all things northern and a desire to support the talented artists and creatives from around their beloved region, The gift shop celebrates all that makes the North such a special place.

Initially conceived as an online gift shop selling presents from around the region, they began their journey with a few supportive artists. They have now grown to include prints, cards, homeware and gifts. Their wares are directly sourced from more than 60 artists in the region, who all celebrate different aspects of the North.

Over the past three years, they have developed from an online gift shop to their first shop in Whitley Bay. They then went on to open a total of three stores. These include Corbridge in the Tyne Valley. In 2019, they re-located the Whitely Bay shop to a new base inside the iconic Grade II-listed Spanish City.

Owners, Lucy and Paul, are passionate supporters of their local community. All of their gifts have been sourced locally with ethically-minded talent. Their sustainable gift wrapping is biodegradable and comes complete with a thoughtful tourist tip for all purchases online.

The shop offers a beautiful range of Gifts, Prints and Cards.  All goods are sourced directly from artists who live and work in the North East of England.

What Makes For The Love Of The North Unique?

Like many northerners, For The Love of The North has always been an advocate for dismantling the ‘grim up north’ ideology. An ideology deep-rooted in UK culture. The Love of The North works with local talent to ensure that this culture is showcased and celebrated.

They are also are committed to supporting the community with a variety of initiatives.

During the first lockdown, in March 2020, For The Love of The North created an exclusive series of North East inspired NHS fundraising rainbow prints. These were created in collaboration with local artists,  including Lisa Kirkbride. 25% of each sale is donated to local Northumbria NHS Trust’s Bright Charity. The Charity has raised over £10,000 to date.

One of these NHS charity prints was selected to feature in the 2021 Newcastle Cathedral’s Time Capsule. An initiative designed to showcase the region in a snapshot in time. The time capsule featured some incredibly creative work from the area. It will be opened in 100 years.  They hope their contribution will show Newcastle and the surrounding area as a vibrant, dynamic place.

Throughout the year, For The Love of The North participate in volunteering, mentoring and charity activities across the North East in support of their beloved community.

To ensure optimum sustainability, For The Love of The North support a different artist each month to create an exclusive clothing collaboration.  They can ensure the items are produced with organic cotton, using vegan inks. By making them a limited edition, there is no wastage.

As For The Love of The North continues to grow, the team are keen to support creatives across the country and have just launched The Stationery Society.

A monthly subscription box will feature items designed and created in the UK. Each month they collaborate with various British artists based around one theme to create something utterly unique.  25% of sales are awarded to a different charity monthly.

Each Stationery Subscription box brings together the work of 4-6 British artists based around one theme. The boxes will always include:

– Cards
– Pin Badge
– Notebook and/or notepad
– That added extra something special

Designed by artists from across the UK and made in collaboration with British manufacturers, you can rest assured you’re supporting a small indie business.
